What to Know About Voiding and Stooling

We will look for your baby to have at least one wet and one dirty diaper in the first 24 hours of life. During the first few days after birth, 1-2 stools and 3-4 wet diapers per day is common, although all babies are different. After the baby has established a stable feeding pattern, 3-8 stools per day are common.

Breastfed babies will often have a stool every time they feed. The “normal” breastfed baby’s stool can vary from yellow and watery to yellow and seedy to the consistency of peanut butter. The color can even be green at times but should never be red or bloody. If your baby is having red or bloody stools, give us a call.

By the time your baby is 1week old, expect 6+ wet diapers per day. In the newborn period, it is common for babies to have an orange-red substance in their urine called urate crystals. It is not a cause for alarm.
