JAUNDICE: In utero your baby has red blood cells just like you and I do that carry oxygen. After birth, these cells die and are broken down. This can cause your baby to turn yellow-orange and develop jaundice. Occasionally, this bilirubin level (jaundice level) gets too high and your baby will need phototherapy (light therapy). If the level is not concerning, it may be recommended that you expose your baby to indirect (not direct) sunlight. Your baby will have a blood sample taken before discharge from the hospital to make sure the bilirubin level is ok. If your baby begins to turn yellow or orange after you are discharged from the hospital, please give us a call.
