BOYS: Circumcision is a personal choice. If your baby is circumcised by the Gomco method, apply petroleum jelly to the circumcision site with each diaper change for 4-5 days after the procedure. If your baby is uncircumcised, there is no need to try to retract the foreskin until at least 1 year of age. Approximately 25% of circumcised males will develop some scar tissue at the head of the penis. We can instruct you as to how to deal with this.
GIRLS: It is common for baby girls to have a thick white vaginal discharge for several months after birth. It is ok to gently clean this with a baby wipe or moistened cotton swab. Some baby’s will have a small amount of vaginal bleeding due to maternal hormones. This usually occurs in the first 2 weeks of life and is not a cause for concern. Remember to clean between the baby’s labial folds too, especially after a bowel movement.
