Breast Care Basics

The most important thing is to make sure the baby is latching correctly. Improper latching position can contribute to discomfort. Make sure the baby is properly attached to the areola. Remove the baby’s suction by gently inserting your finger into the baby’s mouth.

Some suggest that applying warm, wet tea bags to the nipples can help alleviate breast pain. This relief is attributed to the tannic acid in tea. Soft silicone nipple shields are helpful for some women. Changing the angle at which your baby is nursing can help with pain as well. Some babies will nurse at different angles on each breast.

It is important to make sure your baby is getting enough Vitamin D if he/she is exclusively breastfed. The AAP recommends a daily vitamin D supplement for your baby. “Just D” is more palatable than many over-the-counter formulations. It can be purchased in stores or on Amazon.com. 1 cc daily by mouth is recommended. This is not necessary if your baby is receiving 17 ounces or more of commercial formula daily.
